ChessBase 18: How to download games from lichess.org and chess.com

12/7/2024 – ChessBase 18 now offers direct access to lichess.org and chess.com. Simply enter your account name, select the type of game and the time period, and ChessBase will promptly deliver your desired game list from the 7 billion lichess games. The donation-funded lichess servers are buffered by a huge cache on ChessBase database servers, so that multiple requests do not create a load there. Chess.com games can also be accessed quickly and easily. This provides you with access to your own games, and of course, it's also useful to know the online games of other players when preparing your own! Chief developer Matthias Wüllenweber shows you how it's done in the video!

Grivas on Ding-Gukesh games 7-9

12/6/2024 – After the second rest day, three draws followed in the FIDE World Championship 2024, making the match score 4½-4½. D. Gukesh missed good chances to prevail in games seven and eight, while game nine was probably the ‘quietest’ and most ‘correct’ game of the championship. We are entering the dangerous zone, where every mistake counts double, as there are only six games remaining. The general feeling by now is that D. Gukesh has lost more chances to take the lead than his opponent, and he is fighting more (even sometimes unjustifiably) to take the initiative. My takes. | All photos by Maria Emelianova

Elections in the Greek Chess Federation

12/5/2024 – On December 15, elections will be held within the Greek Chess Federation to elect its new Presidential Board. From 1982 to 2021, the President of the Federation was Mr. Giorgos Makropoulos (IM), who, for many years, held the position of Deputy President of FIDE. Precisely for this reason, since the legislation in Greece prohibits presidential terms for more than 12 years, he was succeeded by Mr. Stathis Efstathopoulos - from 2021 to the present - without, however, moving outside the shadow of his predecessor. Mr. Christos Pilalis (pictured), IA, FI, IO, candidate for President of the Federation, aspires to assume the responsibility of its administration, claiming that Mr. Makropoulos and his close associate Mr. Efstathopoulos, for several years, have not responded to the essential needs of Greek chess. | Photos: Christos Pilalis (private)

World Championship Game 9: A "very precise" draw

12/5/2024 – Game 9 of the World Chess Championship in Singapore brought a more measured yet strategic encounter, ending in a draw after 54 moves. Playing with the white pieces, Gukesh D applied early pressure in a Catalan Opening, but Ding Liren's precise defence kept the balance. Gukesh, who described the game as "very precise from both sides", managed to build a lead on the clock but could not capitalise in the critical moments. With the score tied and only five games left, the match resumes on Saturday. | Photo: FIDE / Eng Chin An

World Senior Championship in Portugal: The weather was good, but Kevin Spraggett was missing

12/5/2024 – The organisers in Portugal would have liked to see former World Championship Candidate Kevin Spraggett, who has been living in Portugal for 35 years, at the World Senior Championships, but he was playing in another tournament. The journey to Porto Santo was also difficult. However, the island rewarded the players with summer weather in November. | Photo: Shortly after half past seven in the morning, the sun was rising on the beach. ChessBase 18 error report - What is your Blunder Elo?

12/4/2024 – The error report in ChessBase is a powerful analysis tool that evaluates a player's calculation accuracy based on their performance in games. By analyzing mistakes in various situations—such as complex positions, moments of attack, or defense—the tool not only identifies error patterns but also estimates the player's Elo rating. The analysis considers factors like position complexity, game phase, and the impact of mistakes to create a detailed profile of the player's strengths and weaknesses. This makes the error report an invaluable resource for both preparing against opponents and assessing personal performance.

Petrosian in 1963. With Gukesh and Ding trading psychological blows as much as tactical ones, Speelman highlights critical moments that reveal each player's mindset and strategy under immense pressure. Fabiano Caruana wins U.S. Masters with 8 out of 9

12/3/2024 – Fabiano Caruana was the clear rating favourite at the U.S. Masters, an open tournament that was played in Charlotte from 28 November to 1 December. Caruana and other top players rarely play open tournaments, but the U.S. Masters promised FIDE Circuit points, and thus winning the tournament might help Caruana to qualify for the Candidates 2026. Caruana started the tournament with five wins, then lost to GM Nikolas Theodorou but after scoring 3.0/3 in the last rounds he still finished clear first with 8.0/9, gaining 17.11 FIDE Circuit points. | Photos: Charlotte Chess Center
